So how much do you make of this site?

We make nothing. It's a community service started in some Usenet newsgroups.
The banner(s) or pop-up ad(s), if there are any, belong to the site who supplies the site that hosts us for free. A number of people have donated webspace to us. As many mirrors of the site are needed. Proven by the fact that the original site got taken down within 10 days after it went up. We can only assume that AOL leaned on the site in order to make this happen.

Why did you make this site?

As stated above, it all started in some ICQ related Usenet newsgroups. Some people got fed up by AOL updating their ICQ's with banners without so much as notifying them. So steps were taken to fix this. As the majority of ICQ users rarely visits newsgroups, the idea of settings up a webpage as a repository for all the solutions, tips and tricks to deal with these banners was born. So this site came into being.

How did you get that wooden look on your ICQ?

As discussed elsewhere on this site, by using ICQPlus.

Can you guys deal with other spyware software?

No, we limit ourselves to ICQ, but there are some excellent tools to check other programs for spyware. Such as Ad-Aware and OptOut. Both are free even.

Does AOL/ICQ sanction this site?

We don't know as we haven't asked them. *grin* FTR, we have no affiliation with either AOL or ICQ/Mirabilis.

How can I help?

Easy, let as many of your ICQ contacts know about this site as you can. Maybe tell them to let as many of their ICQ contacts know as well. If you find a solution for a banner, fill in our feedback form to let us know.

Why aren't you answering my feedback?

We have indications that AOL is not to happy with this site. So we would rather not get identified by them. But rest assured, all guestbook entries and feedback is read and acted upon within 24 to 48 hours. Schedule and workload permitting.

Who are you?

Ever heard of GhostBusters? "Who ya gonna call......."? We'll, we are AdBusters. Call on us by visiting our site when you have problems with Ad banners in ICQ.

Why all these mirrors?

Because the original site got taken down within 10 days after it was set up. We can only assume AOL leaned on the site hosting it in order for that to happen. So now there are many sites with this information. All interlinked. So if one or more are taken down, the information is still available at other sites.

Why no ready patched DLL's?

Mainly for 3 reasons. There are quite a few ICQ versions out there and each DLL is about 2MB in size. It would require a lot of space. As we would be depending on people to send in patched DLL's, (We can't do it all ourselves) there is a risk some oen may submit an infected DLL. By mistake or otherwise, that does not matter. Finally, if we'd provide a repository of these, we'd be violating AOL's ICQ license. Meaning their lawyers would have a field day with us and every site hosting a mirror. Not something we'd want. :-)

'Icq.exe - Bad Image' error in Windows 2000

This is a Windows 2000 feature. It checks if DLL's get modified and complains about it. A quick and dirty fix as proposed by Magnus from Denmark:
Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Scroll down, locate the Windows Installer service.
Right click it and choose stop.
Right click it again and choose properties.
Select "disabled" as startup type.
Click OK.
Be happy.
